In 1890, Rose Cleveland, sister of President Grover Cleveland and former White House hostess, began a passionate correspondence with one-time Wayland resident Evangeline Simpson Whipple, a wealthy young widow and eventually wife of Minnesota's Episcopal Bishop Whipple. Their letters reveal a devoted romance that spanned decades and continents, until the two women finally made a life together in Italy.
